John was born in Elizabeth, NJ in September of 1941 as the youngest of five boys to Ralph DiBattista and Pauline Colone. His parents and his brothers Arthur DiBattista, Dominic DiBattista, Ralph DiBattista, and Guy DiBattista have all preceded him in death. After high school graduation in 1959, he entered Marine Boot Camp and shortly thereafter he married his first wife Pat McNamara. He and Pat had two daughters and one son. Their son, Michael, had medical problems and passed away at a very young age.
John served in the Unites States Marine Corps for four years. Before being discharged as a Corporal E-4, he served as a weapons platoon machine gunner, squad leader, section leader and platoon sergeant. Later he served two years in the Army. Before being discharged as a Sergeant E-6, he served in special forces, combat demolition specialist, and he was Airborne qualified.
John began his career as a police officer in the Garwood New Jersey Police Department where he spent three years as a patrolman and detective. When he moved to Florida, he joined the Boynton Beach Police Department where he served as a Detective Lieutenant in crime scene, SWAT, underwater recovery/Rescue, armorer and range master. He joined the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Department and served until he retired in 2001 as Captain and Deputy Commander of the Technical Services Bureau. During this time, John obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Resources Management from Pepperdine University.
John married his current wife Pat DelPlato in 1980 and gained three more daughters and a son. John and Pat honeymooned in Key West, FL which became one of their favorite places to celebrate their anniversary. John loved travelling with Pat and their family, and he loved having his friends and family around him at home during a celebration or at a campsite during a weekend away. He was known by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren as “Pop Pop” and was especially happy when spending time with the little ones. John was active and faithful to his church (St. Mark’s Catholic Church, Boynton Beach). He was a member of the Knights of Columbus for 50 years where he served as Grand Knight, Sir Knight, (member of the Fourth Degree), Treasurer, Trustee and the Life Director of Council #4839. He served for 15 years in disaster response for the American Red Cross.
