Verany Wright was born on July 4, 1940, in Saint Ann, Jamaica, the beloved youngest child of Constance and Ruben Duncan and the youngest of six children. She grew up in the warmth of a close-knit family and the beauty of the Jamaican countryside. She attended school in Woodstown, Discovery Bay, and often fondly recalled her daily mile-and-a-half walk and memorable moments from her childhood.
As a young woman, she moved to Kingston, where she completed a Home Economics program that later allowed her to gain employment in the United States. In 1967, she migrated to America, where she and her husband, Herbert, raised their two daughters. There she formed a lifelong sisterhood with Ms. Lucille Chisholm, Ms. Erna Jones, and Ms. Guervena Burton—friends who became family.
Verany worked as a professionally trained home assistant, admired for her skill and meticulous care. She later utilized her sewing abilities while working with the U.S. Department of Defense and eventually transitioned to the healthcare field as a nursing assistant, where she offered compassion, dignity, and comfort to those in her care.
Family was central to her life. She lovingly selected gifts for relatives in Jamaica and cherished her mother with special affection. She delighted in planning family excursions. With Herbert faithfully serving as the family’s driver, these trips became cherished memories filled with joy, laughter, and togetherness. Holidays, especially Christmas, were a treasured time. She took great pride in cooking for special occasions, hosting gatherings, baking her famous fruit cakes, and preparing sorrel with Herbert—traditions that brought warmth and joy to all who shared them.
Known for her kindness, fairness, determination, and unwavering devotion to her family, Verany lived with grace, resilience, and a gentle spirit. In retirement, she enjoyed spirited domino games with her husband and their dear friend Angelo, who continued to visit faithfully every Tuesday after Herbert’s passing—a gesture that made him feel like a son to her. She adored her grandchildren and great-granddaughters, whose presence filled her heart with love and pride. Her life was grounded in her Christian faith. She believed deeply in prayer and often encouraged her loved ones with the simple, steady words, “Give it to God. Pray about it.” Her faith shaped her compassion, wisdom, and strength, leaving a lasting influence on all who knew her.
