Richard A. O'Brien

Richard O’Brien passed away in West Palm Beach. He was pre-deceased by his wife of 51 years, Mary. Services were held at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in West Palm Beach.

Dick was born in Chicago, graduated from Carl Schurz High School and had the good fortune to win a Navy ROTC scholarship that allowed him to attend Yale, where he majored in Physics and was on the Fencing team. Following graduation, he served on the aircraft carrier Midway and later the submarine USS Sea Leopard. He fondly remembered cruises to the Caribbean and Mediterranean and remained close with his fellow officers well into the 2000’s. After completing his Navy service, Dick joined Corning Glass Works. In 1976 he became the American Vice President of the US-USSR Trade and Economic Council in Moscow. He and Mary lived in Moscow until the mid-eighties, after which he rejoined Corning until his retirement.

In 1999, he and Mary moved to Boynton Beach and, later, Hypoluxo. Mary passed away in 2006 and Dick subsequently moved to West Palm Beach where he resided until his death.

He is survived by his son Andrew and his wife Stephanie; daughter Kate and her husband Peter Frykman; 3 grandchildren; and 2 great grandchildren.
