Richard Thomas (Dick) Morick of Boynton Beach, Florida passed away on Sunday, June 28, 2020 at the age of 89. After several months of declining health, Dick died peacefully in his sleep.
Dick was born in Lakewood, Ohio on July 22, 1930, to father Steve Morick and mother Anna Hnat. He was the second oldest of five sons and two daughters. The family was split up after his mother died, and he moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with several of his siblings to live with his grandparents, Bubba and Dzedo.
He met his wife Jean and was married in Pittsburgh. Dick made a career working in sales for Hotpoint, and eventually General Electric, retiring after 43 years with the company. Upon retirement he and Jean moved to Florida to be close to family and play golf.
Dick was born handicapped, but you would never know it. Handicapped wasn’t a common word when he grew up. And it did not define him. Dick grew up playing all sports and was well known throughout the region as a standout athlete. He passed on his competitive spirit to his children, and continued his athletic quests wreaking havoc on his retired golf community by taking the club championship. As Dick would say, ”Not bad for a crippled kid.”
Dick and Jean had an extensive network of friends. Whether it was golf outings, card games, road trips, or just the occasional holiday party, their get togethers would always end up in huge laughter. And regardless of the circumstances everyone would have fun.
It was impossible to have a bad day around Dick. A loving, caring man, it was commonplace for him to ask you “How you doing?” Inevitably your reply, as he met you with his infectiously contagious smile would be, “I’m doing good…how about you?”, to which he would immediately reply “Fantastic!” He genuinely cared about everyone he met and would frequently brighten everyone’s day with a joke or a funny look. Gloom or sadness were not in the cards around Dick…the order of the day would be laughter and fun. And…he never met a doughnut he didn’t like.
Affectionately known as Dzedo in his later years, he passed on the culture of his Slovak heritage through songs he would sing and phrases he would use. Family get togethers were very important to him, and he always took the time to stop in for a visit to extended family and friends whenever he was traveling. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
An exceptional provider, loving husband, guiding father, proud grandpa, and a tender great grandpa, Dick’s legacy lives on in his children and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife Jean, and by his sister Theresa, and brothers David, and Jerry. He is survived by his brothers Steve and Jim, and his sister Joanne; his children Donna, Rick, Sandi, Tim and Jerry; grandchildren Jamie, Aaron, Teal, Jenna, Trea, Evan, and Jack, and great-granddaughter Camila.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a private funeral service will be held for immediate family members only.
