Richard Arthur Monahan, 85, of Boynton Beach, FL passed away Saturday, 5/9/15. He was born in Cambridge, MA 8/4/1929. His parents were William and Marion Monahan. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Licata Monahan, his daughter, Susan L. Barbaree, his step children, Peter Licata, John Licata, Patrick Licata, and Michelle Lang, and his grandson, Brian Thomas Barbaree. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Paul, Diane, Ted, Fran, Stephen, Connie, Leslie, Barbara, Janet, William, and Robert. He is predeceased by his brother Howard, sisters, Mildred and Virginia, his nephews Alan, David, and Christoper; and his stepson, Tony Licata. He was in the Armed Forces shortly after high school and received an honorable discharge. He then worked as a photographer for a Newspaper in Boston as a photographer. He moved to Boynton Beach in 1959 and became a letter carrier for the Boynton Beach Post Office. Within a few years, he became the Postmaster and was the Postmaster here for 25 years. Upon his retirement, he became a big brother in the big brother/big sisters program. He became a guardian ad litem for foster children. He also taught illiterate people how to read at the Boynton Beach library one to two nights a week. Later in his retirement, he became a HAM radio operator and used to volunteer for the Boynton Beach Fire Department at Station #5. He was also a member of their C.E.R.T. team He also was a member of the Power Squadron and taught the “Safe Boating Class” there for many years. He was also a member of the Boynton Beach Historical Society He was healthy most of his life until 12/15/14; and since his admission to the hospital on that date, he had 3 surgeries, numerous stints in rehabs, etc. and just wasn’t able to make it back. He was a wonderful man, did a lot for this community, and will be missed by many. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Autism Society of America. In short, the world will be lacking without him in it.
The Committal Service and Military Honors will be held at 2:30 PM on Thursday, May 21, 2015 at the South Florida National Cemetery, 6501 South State Road #7, Lake Worth, Florida.
