PETER E. REINHOLD
Peter E. Reinhold loving husband to Faye A. Reinhold for sixty-five years, passed away on March 23, 2016 peacefully with family by his side.
Peter was born in Philadelphia, PA in 1927 to Sarah (Sally) Reinhold, an accomplished artist and art teacher and John G. Reinhold, a biochemist by training who headed up the Pepper Lab at the University of Pennsylvania.
Peter’s love for nature and weather began at a young age. He grew up on Cherry Hollow farm in Glen Mills, PA. It provided a wonderful playground filled with apple and cherry trees, farm animals, a horse and plenty of acreage to explore with his two siblings, Johann (John) and Gretel (Gerry). As a young boy Peter wrote in his diary daily, recording both the weather and how many eggs he collected from his beloved named chickens. This love of nature continued to grow and was passed onto his children who share fond memories of sitting on the outdoor patio watching lightning bolts zip by, much to Faye’s dismay. Peter was an avid gardener at their home in Groveland, MA and his vegetables won multiple awards including his cauliflower that took Best in Show at the Topsfield Fair, the oldest fair in the country.
Peter was in the Navy Amphibian Forces and served in the South Pacific during World War II. After the war, he attended Temple University, and graduated in 1951 from Goddard College in Vermont with a double major in psychology and education. In 1953 he received a Master’s Degree in Psychiatric Social Work from the University of Pennsylvania.
He began his professional career at Friend’s Psychiatric Hospital as a clinical social worker and then went to Erie Child Guidance Clinic in Erie, PA. For the following six years Peter managed two nursing homes in Linwood, Massachusetts. From here he went to Merrifield Center, in Worcester as the Director. Upon receiving a grant from the National Institute of Mental Health, he pioneered a new program for foster care placement to avoid institutionalized treatment. This program was later used as a national prototype by the Department of Health and Human Services.
Peter was the CEO of Children’s Friends and Family Service Society of the North Shore for 23 years, a private, non-profit child welfare, family service and mental health agency. During his tenure at Children’s, Peter was responsible for leading the charge to get social workers and agencies in the state of Massachusetts professionally licensed. This helped raise the standard of care and made mental health services far more accessible through insurance reimbursement. Peter was recognized by the National Association of Social Workers as Social Worker of the Year in 1978 in recognition of his eight years of work on this licensing initiative. While at Children’s Peter was selected as Chairman of the North American Advisory Council of the Child Welfare League of North America.
Peter was fortunate to have a long retirement he lovingly enjoyed with Faye. Their early retirement years were spent at their home in the Mexican village of Ajijic, just outside of Guadalajara. It was 16 years ago on the 3,500 mile return trip in Peter’s truck that they detoured to discover their new winter home at the Colonial Club. It was also during this time period that Peter spearheaded a program in Haverhill, MA to plant thousands of bushels of sweet corn to supply area food pantries.
The Colonial Club quickly became their much loved second home until they moved there permanently five years ago. Peter continued to be very active in the community including serving on the Board of Directors, Section 2 for twelve years. They developed many friendships that were near and dear to Peter's heart.
Peter is survived by his loving wife, Faye, eight children, eighteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren as follows: Karl and his wife Tracy, and their children Evan and his wife Courtney and their children Emma, Jackson, and Will, Collin and his wife Teresa, Joshua, Michael and his fiancé Sohayla, Sam and Riley, Mark and his wife Jane and their child Isabel, Gaye and her partner Grace and her daughter Bella, Lee and her children Brett and Brooke and her fiancé James, Peter and his wife Deana and their children Peter III and his wife Chelsea, and Bria, Aline and her husband Andrew and their children Julian and Eliza, John and his wife Dyan and their children Lilian and John and Lisa and her husband Steven and their children Justin and his wife Physician, and Dylan.
