Paul Dakin Herbs, 76, of Lantana, peacefully passed away following a brief battle with cancer on August
3, 2023. Paul was a husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle, and was affectionately known by
his family as “Dake”.
Paul was born on November 3, 1946, in Hudson, NY, to the late Paul and Dorothy (Ostrander) Herbs. He
was a 1965 graduate of Ichabod Crane High School, in Valatie, NY. Following graduation, Paul joined the
US Navy in 1966, where he served as a Petty Officer 2nd Class, Dental Technician, in support of the famed
2nd Marine Division, at Camp Lejeune, until his honorable discharge from the military in 1970. After
completing his military service, Paul attended Hudson Valley Community College, receiving an Associates
degree in Applied Sciences (Medical Laboratory Technology) and then attended The State University of
New York, at Plattsburg, from 1972 to 1974. Paul went on to earn a journeyman’s license in plumbing, a
field in which he held a career of service to others.
An avid drummer and surfer, Paul always had a set of drums and his surfboard at the ready. His first
band, as a teenager, was called Peter and the Wolves. He and his young bandmates enjoyed treating the
surrounding neighborhoods to their musical talent. His latest band, which Paul played with well into his
seventies, was named B Flat & the Yard Cats. They enjoyed playing at multiple local venues and
entertaining all who came to hear them play, which included a small group of regular followers. Paul was
a skilled plumber who served his community continually until his diagnosis, as retirement was not in his
plan. In his spare time, in addition to his large and vast collection of music, Paul would collect and
attempt to repair small electronics and engines, all of which he called “machines”. This became a
common source of humor and jokes from his family, when they would often find new vacuums, radios,
clocks, and other electronics in his garage. Paul would surely return the jokes, when he would walk into
the house with his now working “machine”.
Paul married Veronica (Joos) Herbs in Boulder, Colorado, in 1980. After the birth of their first daughter,
Paul and Veronica relocated to Palm Beach County, Florida. There, the Herbs’ had two additional
daughters and two sons. Paul and Veronica raised their family in Palm Beach County together, where
Paul remained until his passing. Paul is predeceased by his parents, Paul and Dorothy Herbs, one son,
Paul Michael Herbs, and one daughter, Kimberly Herbs. Paul is survived by his wife, Veronica Herbs, his
children, Rebecca (Matthew) Ott, Patricia Herbs, and Joshua Herbs, his grandchildren Alexandra Ott,
Lucy Ott, Sebastian Slattery, Malaki Slattery, and Ocean Thomas, as well as his siblings Gretchen (Lorne)
Dawes, Everett (Brenda) Herbs and Wilhelmena (Darrin) Mazure.
Paul’s family will reunite privately for graveside services in his honor. A celebration of life will follow for
local friends and family.
In lieu of flowers, Paul’s family respectfully requests that any donations be sent
to Scobee-Combs-Bowden Funeral Home to assist with funeral and burial expenses
