On early Sunday morning, February 7, 2021, Ora Winona Hughes Brinkley, departed peacefully, while surrounded by her loving family in Boynton Beach, Florida. Ora, affectionately known as “Sis” was born on September 22, 1934, in Newport News, Virginia, then, known as Warwick County. Ora was the youngest of eight children born to the late James Richard Sr. and Virgie Lee Tynes Hughes.



Ora was a graduate of Carver High School in Newport News and attended Virginia State College, where she earned a double major and received a BS Degree in Physical Education and in US History.



Ora was an Educator in the Newport News Public School System for 35 years and taught at the former George Washington Carver and Homer L. Ferguson High Schools. Ora taught physical Education, United States History and Black American History.

Ora was married to the love of her life, the late Irvin Louis Brinkley Jr. After marriage, the couple started a family and built a comfortable home in Newport News, Virginia. After the death of her husband, Ora later moved to Florida with her children, where she served as an active member of the Boynton North Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses, Boynton Beach, FL., until she fell asleep in death. Ora dedicated her life in water baptism as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in the Summer of 1950. During her later years she was able to auxiliary pioneer by writing letters, sending emails, texting and assisting with bible studies in the ministry. She loved worshiping with her family and witnessing to all who would listen to her life saving Bible truths.



Ora was also preceded in death by her husband, Irvin Louis Brinkley, two daughters, Irvinia and Leora Nicole Brinkley; two sisters, Elizabeth and Caleathia Hughes; five brothers, Hiawatha(Eloise Hughes), James Jr.(Gladys Hughes), Emmitt( Martha Hughes), Augustus(Virginia), and Burl Hughes.



Ora leaves to cherish her precious memories, her loving and devoted daughter, Lalita Brinkley Samrai (Balraj), Boynton Beach, FL.; one loving brother, Alphonso Hughes, Newport News, VA.; grand children, Morgan Whitaker(Abigail),Lantana, FL.; Rajeev and Jahan Samrai, Boynton Beach, FL.; three sisters-in-law, Margretta Hughes, Hampton, VA, Eula Brinkley, Thibodaux, LA and Cherron Mitchell, (Malcom)Portsmouth, VA.; one brother-in-law, Larry Brinkley, Portsmouth, VA., and a host of very special nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and her family at Boynton North Congregation, whom she adored.

The family of Ora would like to thank all family and friends who came from far and near to visit after her move to Boynton Beach, Florida.

We are also very much so appreciative of all who helped in the care of Ora on several occasions in Virginia and South Florida. These individuals travelled both far and near and spent many hours and even weeks at a time, helping our mom. Her self- sacrificing nieces, Hyla Hughes Rumper, Mary Shepherd and Pamela Southall; loving sisters in the faith, Reata Brown, Beverly James, Ruth Dent, Marie Delpeche, Fran Davidson, Epifany Gue, Joarys Melendez, Chanel Huggins, Lil Suchak, Nelly Gibbs, Rosa Johnson, Shirley Taylor, Tabitha Hood, Gerlinda Pierre, Dukerline Placid, Angela Cole, and Mary Bellony, to mention a few.



We are grateful to the Unit managers, nurses, nurse aids, social workers, therapists, doctors and critical care nurses from Vitas, Boynton Beach, Florida; The Nightingale nurses and nurse aids are also commended for their care of our mom. Also we appreciate the care shown from Medication Station Pharmacy, including all the employees and especially, Erica and Dawn for always being so friendly, caring and accommodating. We also would like to thank her physicians, Dr. Ella Remenson and Dr. Ferdinand Keller for their care of her for many years.


The family of Ora Brinkley would like to genuinely thank all family, and friends, who gave the needed encouragement, support, and comfort during this sorrowful time in our lives. The love and heartfelt sincerity shown by all concerned, will never be forgotten and is much appreciated at this difficult time.

Ora's life will be memorialized on March 13, 2021 at 4:00 pm on Zoom.
