Mary Jane ”Jean” Cox, a resident of Boynton Beach for 45 years, passed away on Monday, August 15th at Trust Bridge Hospice after a very short illness. She was 91 years old.

Jean was born Mary Jane Gibney in Bootle, in Lancashire, England. She was a teenager and young adult during World War Two. Her family home was in Liverpool—at the time Britain’s largest seaport—which was constantly under attack from bombers. In part because of the dislocations caused by the war, she was surrounded by a cast of characters, relatives, friends of friends, and near strangers who came to take refuge in the Gibney family home and often stayed for years. She talked often and amusingly of the wartime deprivations, the acceptance of which is so often attributed to the English “stiff upper lip.”

She attended Everton Valley Convent, The College of Podiatry, and Palm Beach State College. She was a member of the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists.

She and her husband, Eric, emigrated to the United States in 1960 and lived in Pennsylvania and New Jersey before moving to Florida in 1972. Jean was employed with Bethesda Memorial Hospital for over 7 years. She was an executive secretary, chiropodist and dog breeder and, in her “retirement,” studied nursing, a life-long ambition interrupted by WWII.

She was the oldest daughter of William John and Mary Jane (Ure) Gibney late of Waterloo, Liverpool, and is survived by her daughter, Susan, of Boynton Beach; a sister Elizabeth and two brothers, Brian and Joseph, all of Lancashire, England; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Her husband, Eric Sidney, and her daughter, Penelope Louise, pre-deceased her.

The family is very grateful for the kindness and attention of the nurses, doctors and staff at Trust Bridge Hospice, and the comfort provided by Father Dan Fink of St. Mark Catholic Church in Boynton Beach, where Jean was a parishioner and member of the Legion of Mary.

The family will receive guests from 9:00a.m. until 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 24, 2016 at Scobee-Combs-Bowden Funeral Home, corner of U.S. Hwy. #1 & N.E. 15th Ave., Boynton Beach. A Requiem Mass will follow at St. Mark Catholic Church, 643 St. Mark Place, Boynton Beach at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to one of these charities would be appreciated:
Trust Bridge Hospice at Bethesda Hospital East, Boynton Beach
The Sierra Club.
