Margaret Mary (Edwards) Barr passed away peacefully at her home in Boynton Beach, FL on January 16, 2020. She was born in 1942 in New Philadelphia, PA to Margaret and Alfred Edwards. She was the 4th of 5 children and had wonderful relationships with each of her siblings. A strong devotion to the Catholic Church was an important part of her upbringing, which stayed with her through her entire life. After graduating from Nativity BVM High School in Pottsville, PA and Goldey-Beacom College in Wilmington DE, Margaret pursued her sense of adventure and love of travel by joining TWA Airlines as a flight attendant. She married J. Harry Barr, Jr in 1965 and devoted her life to her husband and five children, while setting a strong example of strength, loyalty, love and independence. After moving from Binghamton, NY to South Florida in 1992, she had a very successful career in the banking and mortgage industry, most recently with JP Morgan Chase in Palm Beach. She enjoyed her work and cherished the friendships gained through it. Her retirement in 2011 provided her the time to do more of the things she loved most; cooking for her family and friends, volunteering at her church and relaxing at the beach, but that was only when she wasn’t burning up the airways once again, frequently traveling to visit her sisters, children and grandchildren throughout the country. She had an incredibly strong will to live right until the end. She will be eternally remembered and loved as wife, mother, sister, aunt, Mossy, Nanny, and Nanny Moss.
She is survived by her husband James Harry Barr, Jr, her five children J. Harry Barr III (Wendy), Molly Ginty (Maxwell), Katherine O’Brien (John), Brennan Barr and Kelen Walker (Brian); her nine grandchildren, Maxwell Ginty, Jr, Emily (Ginty) Procopio, Eve Ginty, Skylar Barr, Peyton Barr, Harrison Barr, Donovan O’Brien, Isabel Walker and Kevin Walker. She is also survived by her sisters Alecia LaScala and Bridget McDevitt in addition to many loving nieces, nephews, great nieces and great-nephews. She was predeceased by her parents and brothers John Edwards and Fr. Thomas Edwards.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 10935 South Military Trail, Boynton Beach, FL at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, January 20. A burial will be held at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Greensboro, NC on Friday, Jan. 24 at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
