Joseph Howard Sweeney, 87, passed away on July 19th, 2024. He was born November 28th, 1936 in Buffalo, NY and resided in Boynton Beach, FL.
He grew up in Buffalo, NY and attended Canisius High school and then graduated from Canisius College. He went on to Case Western Reserve University where he attained his Master's Degree. As a lifelong learner, at 55, he returned to school and obtained his JD at Pace University. He earned numerous certificates and degrees from institutions far and wide. He was passionate about education.
He served his country for over 2 and a half years on active duty (Fort Sill, OK) in the field artillery, and was honorably discharged from the United States Army in 1962 after having achieved the rank of 1st Lieutenant.
He worked as a CPA at Price Waterhouse, a CFO at Iroquois Brands and then retired. He soon realized retirement didn't suit him, so he returned to school to study law. From there he opened his own law office in Fairfield, CT, practicing probate law. After a few years, he decided he was ready to retire, whereupon he relocated to Boynton Beach, FL, to enjoy the heat.
Throughout his life, Joe enjoyed traveling to all parts of the world. He spent time in Caracas, Paris, London, Rome, Morocco, Germany, Cuba and many other tropical islands, the Galapagos Islands, Switzerland, Austria, and Ireland, as well many parts of the United States. He held dual citizenship in the United States and Ireland. He had a pilot's license and he was a mariner. He was even known to sink a boat or two. He was very active in the Catholic church. In addition to traveling, he enjoyed eating cookies, reading books, eating other cookies, listening to classical music, eating more cookies, and most importantly, spending time with his three children and four grandchildren.
Joe believed in helping people and serving his community, and did his best to make the world a better place.
He is predeceased by his parents Thomas M. Sweeney and Ethel Sweeney, and his brother William Sweeney. He is survived by his oldest brother Thomas Sweeney, his children Maureen K. Sweeney, Michael J. Sweeney and his wife Elizabeth Sweeney, Kate Beeson and her husband Mark Beeson, his grandchildren Theseus Beeson, Ray Sweeney, Cooper Sweeney and Ada Beeson. He is also survived by his ex-wife Eileen P. Sweeney and numerous nieces, nephews, and their children and grandchildren.
Mass will be held August 5th, 2024 at 11am at St. Mark's Church, 643 N.E. 4th Avenue, Boynton Beach, FL 33435 followed by interment at 1pm with military honors at South Florida National Cemetery, located at 6501 South State Road 7, Lake Worth FL 33449.
