John Archibald Dunning
John was born on October 8, 1941 and passed away from complications of pneumonia on March 17, 2026, in Boynton Beach, FL. He was 84 years old.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Acklen Rae Dunning, his daughter, Anne "Beau" R. Kealy and son-in-law, Patrick J. Kealy of Hingham, MA., his son, John "Jad" A. Dunning, Jr., and daughter-in-law, Christina Dunning of Tiburon, CA and his four grandsons, Aidan Dunning Kealy, Finnegan Blake Kealy, Mason Robert Dunning and John "Jack" A. Dunning, III.
John was a graduate of Trinity Pawling School and the University of Pennsylvania. He served as a lieutenant in the United States Naval Reserve. He was a long-term resident of New Canaan, CT. and Nantucket, MA. He and Acklen moved to Delray Beach in 1998 and recently moved to Boynton Beach.
John lived fully, guided by integrity, purpose, and a deep devotion to those he loved. A man of few words, he carried himself with quiet strength and conviction. Fiercely loyal and protective, his greatest pride was his family—being a father and grandfather, and a devoted husband to Acklen, whom he adored.
Though disciplined and principled, John was kind and had an enormous heart, especially when it came to his dogs. He delighted in Tigger’s mischief and doted endlessly on his little girl, Doge. He was gregarious by nature, with a strong spirit and a genuine love of people. A dedicated friend to many, he had an instinctive ability to connect with others, especially when they needed it most. He gave his time and attention generously, putting people at ease and making them feel seen and valued.
John’s humor was unmistakable—dry, sharp, and often accompanied by an infectious chuckle that could grow into a full, roaring laugh. Though some fondly called him “Stunning Dunning,” he rejected the nickname, remaining humble and never taking himself too seriously.
Curious and driven, John was never idle. He spent 25 years in advertising, rising to senior status at BBDO, New York as a member on the Board. When he felt the industry had lost its creative spark, he pivoted, building a successful consulting business. His clients included GE, ESPN, The Wall Street Journal, UPS, MasterCard and Merrill Lynch. His intellectual curiosity led him to many pursuits—he studied to become a sommelier, came within hours of earning his pilot’s license, and later found fulfillment as a real estate agent during his years in Florida.
An avid reader and true intellect, John also loved sports and competition. A talented athlete, he played hockey in college and continued with passion in tennis, paddle, and golf. He could never get enough time on the greens—remembered playing even with snow on the ground.
Some of his happiest moments were simple: a paperback in hand - the latest suspense thriller, heading to the beach for a quick jump in the ocean, and a nap in the sun. He was equally content snoozing in front of a game—golf, football, or tennis playing in the background.
John will be remembered for his strength, his wit, his charm, his integrity, and above all, his deep love for family and friends. He made people feel special simply by being present, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who knew him.
Funeral services will be held privately.
