Janet Leemon Hakala was born on July 11, 1934 to Leonard and Lillian Leemon of Marissa, Illinois. She is survived by her husband, Ronald T. Hakala; son, David Centola; sister, Carolyn Wieland; daughter-in-law, Marcie Centola and brother-in-law, Karl Wieland.
She was a trustee of the Historical Society of Boynton Beach, a member of the Boynton Beach Woman’s Club and an officer of the lretta Sherman Chapter #145 of the Order of Eastern Star. She performed as a member of The Palm Beach Gardens Concert Band, the James E. Buffan Gold Coast Concert Band, the Symphonic Band of the Palm Beaches, the American Legion Concert Band of Ft. Lauderdale, the Royal Palm Beach Concert Band and with the flute ensemble Flutes For Fun. She volunteered as a flute instructor in several Palm Beach County elementary schools. She was a member of the Florida Flute Association and the National Flute Association.
Janet attended the Southern Illinois University, She worked for the National Security Agency in Washington, D.C. She was one of the first Guardian Ad-litems in Palm Beach County, Florida. Much of her working life was as a legal secretary and a para-legal.
While Janet was a member of the Gardens Concert Band, she served as the Chairwoman of the Scholarship Fund which raised money for scholarships to send students to summer music camps. In two years as Chairwoman she raised $79,000. Because of her caring, many lives have been enriched.
There will be a Celebration of her life on Monday, April 2, 2018 at 11:00 AM at First Presbyterian Church, 235 S. W. 6th Ave., Boynton Beach, Florida. Further services and burial will be in Marissa, Illinois.
