HARRELD NEWMAN KIRKPATRICK
A distinguished World War II veteran and a talented golfer who won dozens of amateur tournaments, died June 19, 2017 at his home in Boynton Beach, FL. He was 97.
Mr. Kirkpatrick was born in Beech Creek, KY on Nov. 23, 1919. He was one of four children born to Raymond and Gertrude Kirkpatrick. The family later moved to Russellville, KY where Mr. Kirkpatrick grew up. He attended Murray State University on a basketball scholarship and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in science in 1942.
After graduation, he enlisted in the Navy. His service during World War II took him to Iceland, Russia, and Italy and he participated in the Allies’ D-Day Invasion of Normandy, France in 1944. Mr. Kirkpatrick left the Navy in 1946 as a lieutenant commander and returned to Kentucky where he worked as an engineer for the Beech Creek Coal Co. Later, he was made general partner of the company, now known as Kirkpatrick Beech Creek Coal Co. Ltd.
Mr. Kirkpatrick served as Kentucky’s commissioner of the Department of Mines and Minerals from 1969 to 1979. He was also a former mayor of Greenville, KY and a former president of the Kentucky Golf Association.
He won the Kentucky Amateur Golf Championship in 1954, was well as dozens of other amateur tournaments, and played in the British Open in 1955. He was inducted into the Senior Golfers of America Hall of Fame in 1997 and the Kentucky Golf Hall of Fame in 1999. Mr. Kirkpatrick played in many of the major tournaments that are open to amateurs, including the U.S. Open, the British Open, the U.S. Amateur Championship, and the British Amateur Championship.
He retired from his mining career in 1980 and moved to Boynton Beach, Florida where he was a member of the Quail Ridge Country Club for more than 35 years.
Survivors include his wife, Marion; his daughter, Ann Michaels; his son, Harreld Kirkpatrick II (Kathy); and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by daughter, Jane Kirkpatrick Donoho.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, November 3, 2017 at 10:00 AM at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 10935 South Military Trail, Boynton Beach. A Committal Service with Military Honors will follow at the South Florida National Cemetery, 6501 South State Road #7 (also known as Hwy. #441), Lake Worth.
