It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Gloria Jean (Sam) Mullen, 67, of Boynton Beach, FL. She passed away, with her only child by her side, on October 13, 2019 after a courageous battle with pulmonary fibrosis.

Gloria was born on September 23, 1952 to Louis and Dorothy Sam in Syracuse, NY. She attended Corcoran High School, where she met her soon to be husband, Lawrence D. Mullen. They married in 1970 and had their first and only child, a daughter. They realized they were too young and that they both wanted different things in life so they ended their marriage a year later.

Gloria was only 17 when she had her daughter and wasn’t really sure what she wanted to do in life. She tried a few different jobs and decided to follow in her younger sister’s footsteps, Hilarie Sam, and became a hairdresser

In 1980, Gloria and her daughter moved to Alexandria, VA. Gloria built a good reputation in her field and eventually opened her own salon, Pazzazz, with her partner. It was very successful due to Gloria’s strong work ethic and skills as a beautician.

After her daughter went to college in 1990, Gloria decided to move out west where she could enjoy her favorite hobby, skiing. She settled in Colorado, where she got her degree as an IT tech. She enjoyed her life there but decided to move to Rhode Island, in 2005, to be close to her daughter and her two grandbabies. She loved being a nana and would spend as much time with her grandkids as she could.

When her daughter’s (ex) husband relocated the family to New Hampshire for work, she decided to move to Florida to be close to her sister.

Gloria is best known for her big personality, boisterous laugh and love for her family. She also had a passion cooking and traveling.

Gloria is survived by her daughter, Shannon Nartowicz; her two grandchildren Annie and Charlie Nartowicz; her oldest sister, Catherine Sam. She was preceded in death by her parents; Louis Sam and Dorothy (LaZore) Tarbell; and her two sisters, Hilarie and Sheila Sam.

A private celebration of life was held with her family and close friends.
