GEORGE F. CASSELL
1945 – 2018
Our family is saddened to announce the passing of George F. Cassell, on October 3, 2018 following several years of declining health and courageous battles with cancer.
George was born in Plainfield, New Jersey where the family resided until relocating to the Boynton Beach area in 1955. He attended local schools, was a member of the 1963 class of Seacrest High School, was a talented Little League player, and avid car enthusiast. Following graduation, George explored many fields of interest including the publishing industry, construction, and auto repair. Saturday nights would find him at Palm Beach International Raceway awaiting his turn on the quarter mile. Ultimately his passion for building, repairing, and racing cars led him to establish Auto Service Center in Boynton Beach, later including Ernie Kitching as partner in the venture. From these beginnings, George moved on to establish multiple ventures including full service gas stations, retail and wholesale tire distributions, gas grill distribution, as well as building construction. He had a tireless work ethic, a knack for business, and was respected as an honest businessman. He was truly a self-made man.
Despite the long hours required to run successful operations, George found time to indulge his passions as well. After hanging up his racing helmet, he developed a love for fishing and could often be found on his boat, The Dirty White Boy, chasing dolphin, snapper, or sailfish. He later developed a passion for golf resulting in a second home in the mountains of western NC – on the golf course, of course. A master wood worker, he was content to spend his time away from the links finishing his basement, building furniture, bird houses, customizing golf carts, building handicapped ramps, and anything else needed to help the community. An excellent cook, he loved preparing food for family occasions and served up many a holiday meal from his grill.
George was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle. While he was unable to get out much in recent years, his eyes lit up with each visit from his children, grandchildren, and friends. He was a faithful friend, supporting and lending a hand to all who had a need. Whether it be financing or lending his expertise to the development of a new business, sharing his expertise on a wide range of topics, or supporting a wide range of charitable organizations. He set high standards for himself as well as those he knew and loved. As a result, he made us all stronger as individuals.
George was predeceased by his parents, Charles H. Cassell and Frances Chernin, his brother, Charles (Chuck) Cassell, and sister, Marilyn Mangus. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Cheri Cassell of Ocean Ridge, son Chris Cassell (Kirsten) of Lake Worth, daughter, Carrie Cassell (Jose Ortiz) of Hendersonville, NC, sister, Suzanne Dillingham (Denny) in NC, sister, Linda Cassell in FL, his adored grandsons, Colin and Chase, and a host of nieces and nephews.
While it was difficult watching him fade, we were blessed to have had the chance to say goodbye and to spend quality family time in those final hours. Though saddened by his passing, we are grateful that he passed peacefully, comfortably, and painlessly, and are thankful that he is finally free of pain. He is truly loved and will be missed dearly. As per his request, there will be a private family gathering at a later date.
