Obituary of Gabriel Phillips
1933 – 2023
On November 23, 2023, Gabriel Phillips died in Boca Raton, FL at the age of 90. He led a full and exceptional life shared with a trove of friends and family, many of whom accompanied him on yearly expeditions throughout the world. In addition to the excursions Gabe organized, sharing was also about superb food, wine, cigars and stimulating conversation. Gabe was a very loving, kind and generous man to all fortunate to know him. In addition to his relentless pursuit of giving, his other passions included opera, classical music, historical biographies and the New York Times crossword puzzles.
Gabe was born on August 3, 1933 in North Vandergrift, PA to Sam and Margaret Phillips. He was the seventh of Sam and Margaret’s ten children. After graduating from the University of Maryland, Gabe served his two-year duty in the U.S. Army. He then moved to Washington, D.C. taking a job with the Civil Aeronautics Board as an analyst. He continued his education by earning a law degree from George Washington University. Soon after earning his law degree, Gabe was employed by the Air Transport Association where he spent the balance of his working career. He held various positions at ATA retiring as Executive Vice President. His duties, which required extensive travel, included representing numerous U.S. based airlines in route negotiations both domestically and internationally.
In addition to his parents, Gabe was predeceased by siblings Louise Lindemann, Lula Shawah, Irene Boles, Albert Phillips, Martha Phillips, Samuel Phillips, Ramona Freese, Rosalee Phillips and his partner Michael McLeod. He is survived by his brother George Phillips and many, many nephews, nieces and Godchildren.
In lieu of a memorial service, Gabe requested “…….at a suitable time and place to include a sumptuous party for all of my relatives, friends and acquaintances to remember our joyful loving relationship”.
