Donna Jean Luke was born in Martins Ferry, Ohio on February 9, 1939. The only child of Thomas Graydon Luke and Opal Evelyn Howard. Donna was raised in St. Clairsville, Ohio and by all accounts she excelled in school and participated in many school and church functions. She had many friends and maintained a very busy social calendar. She had many great high school memories, Mistletoe Balls, sock hops, football and basketball games, track meets, drama club and the band. She played the flute; however, a big moment was getting to play the drums when a band member was out with the flu. She never had to play the flute again. Every New Years she fondly recalled a special Thespian trip to New York and Times Square and always said, “I was there once upon a time.” THE FIFTIES, a great time to be a teenager.
Soon after high school, Donna married Bob Roberts. They settled down and had two (2) sons, Bob Jr and Donald Alan Roberts. In the mid 1960’s Donna and Bob decided to part ways however they maintained a close friendship to the end of her life. A few years later, Donna met, and married Keith Allen and they gave birth to Keith Graydon Allen.
In 1972, Donna and Keith moved their family to include Opal Luke, Donna’s Mother, and Regina Howard, Donna’s Grandmother, to the West Coast of Florida and lived for a time in Lehigh Acres prior to the family settling down in the Palm Beach County area of South Florida. For several years she was Vice President of Urban Realty and Appraisal in Boca Raton. In the early 1990’s Donna and Keith divorced.
Donna continued to work in the real estate business. In the mid 1990’s Donna met Tom McCoy. Donna was to say later that Tom was the love of her life. They became partners in life as well as partners in business. Together they ran five (5) business and real estate offices of Real McCoy Mobile Home Sales on the Gold Coast of Florida helping people with their retirement dreams. Donna and Tom had wonderful times together along with their abundance of friends. They hosted and attended many parties and events together. Eventually Donna had to oversee all of Tom’s Florida businesses as he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease and over time his mobility became very limited. In the summer of 2015, his body could not take any more and his time here ended.
In Donna’s opinion, her greatest accomplishment by far was raising her three sons, Bob, Don and Keith. In 2001, God saw fit to take her oldest, Bob, home after a long hard battle with cancer. This was the greatest tragedy of her life, as anyone who has lost a child understands. Don has always lived close by and helped to take care of his Grandmother Opal who lived to the age of 94. He also helped Donna and Tom over the years as Tom’s condition deteriorated. In 2006, while Donna was in a two-day Property Management Continuing Education class, she met Nina Castro. At the conclusion of the class she asked Nina for her phone number to give to her son. Nina said yes and they met 2 days later and have been together 14+ years. Don just recently retired from the City of Boynton Beach after 30 years. Keith is an Attorney in Pearland Texas, a suburb of Houston and is an avid fisherman. He is married to Cindy who is a Controller for Exxon-Mobile. Three (3) children complete their family. Kyle, 22, has recently begun a career as an engineer with Epic Systems in Madison, Wisconsin. Reese, 20, is currently attending the University of Virginia and enjoys fishing just as much as or even more than his dad. Elizabeth, 15, is a Sophomore at Dawson High School and enjoys photography, yearbook and volleyball.
Donna worked very hard all her life to raise and take care of her family. She also spent a great deal of time taking care of others and helping those less fortunate and without a care for her own wellbeing. If she had it and you needed it, she gave it to you. She helped family, friends and more. She never asked for anything in return. She was a sweet, caring and a lovely lady and all are infinitely better for knowing her.
Donna is now at rest and has joined her son Bob, her Mother Opal and Tom McCoy on her continued journey.
The Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, November 7, 2020 at Scobee-Combs-Bowden Funeral Home, 599 N.E. 15th Avenue, Boynton Beach, Florida followed by the Committal Service at Boynton Beach Memorial Park.
