L. Don Combs, age 88, born in Ogema, Wisconsin to Irene and Leslie Combs, moved to Lake Worth at 16 and graduated from Lake Worth High School in 1952. He served in the Army for 2 years, stationed in Korea. Don met his future wife, Jeanne Flora and they were married in 1955. He worked over 40 years in funeral service, starting with Samuel Scobee, then buying into the business and taking over ownership in 1970. Don retired from Scobee-Combs-Bowden Funeral Home in 1992 and eventually moved to Sebring, FL in 2006. He served on the regulatory board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers for the State of Florida for many years and served as President of the Palm Beach County Funeral Director’s Association.
He also served as a director of First Federal Savings & Loan of Lake Worth, which later became SunPoint Savings and then merged with Great Western where he served on the advisory board for 5 years.
Don was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Boynton Beach. He was also a member of the Boynton Beach Masonic Lodge for over 50 years and a member of the Lake Worth Scottish Rite, Amara Shrine Temple. He was very active in community affairs, serving as Past President of the Boynton Beach Chamber of Commerce and of the Rotary Club. He served on the board of the Salvation Army of Lake Worth for many years as well as being a longtime member of the Kentucky Society of the Palm Beaches, serving as President for 2 years.
Don was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing and hunting. Over the years he held memberships in several hunting camps in Florida and Alabama and enjoyed the fellowship of those who shared the same interests.
Don is survived by his wife of 65 years, Jeanne (Flora) Combs; son, Brian D. Combs of Clarkston, Michigan; daughter, Julie C. Smith of Norcross, Georgia; sister, Joyce Pisonero; grandchildren, Andrew Smith, Terry Combs and Wendy Combs.
Friends will be received at Scobee-Combs-Bowden Funeral Home, 599 N.E. 15th Avenue, Boynton Beach, Florida on Saturday, July 31, 2021 from 10:00 AM until the service time at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at Boynton Beach Memorial Park.
